Elaine Gjonovich, owner and founder of Outdoor Fitness Adventure Club in San Clemente, greets fitness guru Richard Simmons.

From heart defect to fitness club founder
What's the big deal, you say? Well, this San Clemente resident owner and founder of Outdoor Fitness Adventure Club  was once told by doctors that she wouldn't live beyond age 5. Early on she was told she had an atrial septal defect, also known as an opening in the atrial septum, or dividing wall between the two upper chambers of the heart known as the right and left atria. ASD is a congenital (present at birth) heart defect. As the fetus is growing, something occurs to affect heart development during the first eight weeks of pregnancy, resulting in an ASD.

In the News

On October 24, a couple milestones were celebrated. No. 1: Elaine Gjonovich of the Outdoor Fitness Adventure Club celebrated her 50th birthday—a day she once thought she’d never see. No. 2: Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club, formerly Pacifica Golf Course, officially opened for business and showcased their new facility by playing host to Gjonovich’s party.

“They rolled out the red carpet for me,” said Gjonovich, who battled heart problems her whole life and was once told she wouldn’t live past age 5. She defied the odds and bleak prognoses into adulthood and now operates Outdoor Fitness with her husband, Richard. The fitness club also just celebrated seven years of successful business.

As for Bella Collina—which means “beautiful hill” in Italian—Manager Jim Shumate explained that the new and improved club has a lot in store to make it a family- and community-friendly place. “We are offering a multitude of memberships to work with people,” he said. “We’re not a snobby club. We’re trying to attract families and the community, and offer affordable rates.”
