How to stay FIT this summer

Summer is the season for vacations, barbecues and lazy beach days.

So how do we maintain FITNESS levels with so many temptations? The best way to stay fit this summer is to schedule your workouts on your calendar.

Remembering your physical body requires MOVEMENT, STRENGTHENING, STRETCHING and REPAIRING will help you priorities your fitness classes and activities.

MOVE (hiking, trail running, nordic walking) will strengthen your cardiopulmonary system and burn extra calories.

STRENGTH (boot camp, cross training, smart bells) will increase lean tissue mass and decrease fat, while increasing your metabolism. STRETCH (pilates, yoga) will keep you flexible, increase muscular balance and standing strong through core strength.

REPAIR is just as vital as move, strength and stretch. After you workout it is extremely  important to REPAIR your muscles and cardiopulmonary system through proper rest and nutrition.

That is where lazy summer beach days come in, relaxing (at the beach) will help you repair your body, thus experiencing better results.

To sum up; plan-ahead, schedule your sensible workouts as part of your regular summer  fitness routine and make time to relax awhile. Don’t forget your healthy snacks and  lemon water for better recovery.

The best defense against dehydration is a good offense -- drink often – at least 1 litre per hour for moderate activity in moderate conditions. It's also better to drink continuously -  6-8 oz. every 15-20 minutes is recommended by the American College of Sports medicine. Remember that thirst is a delayed response, and by the time you're thirsty, your  body is already dehydrated. So pre-hydrating is vital before taking part in any summer exercise. The ACSM also recommends drinking between 14-20 oz. of fluids two hours before exercising.

    REPLACE YOUR ELECTROLYTES

Graphic Crusher TeeYou don't have to be in a marathon or on a century ride for your body to thirst for  electrolytes. In the summer heat, think of how often you bring a sports drink to a  ballgame, BBQ, or to the lake. CamelBak's Elixir is sugar-free, highly portable and can  easily be split in half and added to a small bottle of water or used with the CamelBak Better Bottle. It contains a healthy amount of sodium, which allows your body to absorb water and rehydrate faster, and can help prevent the onset of hyponatremia (when sodium  levels in the body reach a dangerously low level).
